Chocolate Applesauce Bread:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ cups unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

Bourbon Glaze:

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, ½ stick
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons condensed milk
  • 3 tablespoons bourbon
  • pinch salt


Chocolate Applesauce Bread:
1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. In a medium bowl, cream butter, vegetable oil, sugar, eggs, and vanilla. In a large bowl combine flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt.

2. Combine dry ingredients with creamed ingredients, alternating with applesauce and buttermilk until mixed thoroughly. Grease and flour two loaf bans pans.

3. Bake bread for 60 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Store cooled bread, well wrapped, at room temperature for several days. Freeze for longer storage. Serve with or without bourbon glaze.

Bourbon Glaze:
1. Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Remove from heat and add sugars, milk, bourbon, and salt, stirring until incorporated and smooth.
